Working with UX / UI design presupposes, at some point, dealing with platform comparison: am I going to Figma? Do I choose Adobe XD? Or do I send it to Sketch? Today, these are the main tools on the market for designing application or software interfaces and interactions based on artificial intelligence (AI), such as chatbots ; projects that need good documentation linked to the ability of the entire team to see what is being developed.
Not that choosing one of these three means having to wear a football team jersey and love it for the rest of your life. While there is no exclusivity, there is also no rivalry or space for Fla x Flu. That is, you don’t choose one tool just because you hate the other.
But well, to know which the best option is, it is necessary to set up a ring: which one to choose between Figma vs Adobe XD vs Sketch?
In fact, the secret to finding the right platform is to identify your needs and seek the particularity of each of the tools. They are all on the market for you to create better products, but there are some features that work better on one than the other. Knowing this, you can find out which one will suit your needs.
Below, we separate the main points of each interface design platform according to eight categories (Collaboration, System, Prototyping, Highlight, Plug-ins, Value, Offline and Negative point).
Here we evaluate the collaborative capacity of these tools. In addition to allowing you to work together in real time, the collaboration features let anyone with access add a note to the design – from your client to the fellow developer.
Sketch The premise of the tool was isolated work, to only be shared with the team when it was ready. However, the market evolves and brings new needs, and Sketch went after them. The collaboration option was implemented through Sketch Cloud – where the user uploads the design and shares it with with a team.
Figma tool itself was created with the premise of being collaborative. A lot of people consider Figma to be the Google Docs of design and, basically, that’s right: an interface that you can edit simultaneously with developers and managers. With the cursor identifying each member, it is easy to know who is who.
At the end of 2019, it was deploying real-time collaboration features a la Figma on Adobe XD. The truth is that, currently, the difference between the two tools in terms of collaboration is very small. In XD’s sharing mode, the user can create, edit and give access to pages of his design – the only thing is that the colleague’s cursor working is not visible as in Figma.
For a long time, Macs and designers lived together in the imagination of many people, and this is precisely because Sketch only worked on the macOS system. With the arrival of Figma and Adobe XD, this exclusivity was left behind.
MacOS only – the platform was created on top of that system and remains true to it.
Web-based system (that is, it is an online platform accessible at any time / place / equipment).
Windows and macOS.
Another important feature of these interface design tools is prototyping. In Figma the feature was implemented in 2017 and in Sketch it appeared in the following year; in the specific case of Adobe XD, it was born with this function.
Although it allows the creation of prototypes, Sketch will be more complete if you use it with other applications, such as InVision.
Has good prototyping capabilities and has an excellent performance in this function.
Prototyping is a native feature of Adobe XD, which also allows you to prototype voice interfaces and also create animated prototyping using a tool called auto-animate.
On these platforms, what we consider to be strengths are the features that flow perfectly or else that we see as their great differentials. Check analysis!
It is the most experienced platform of all and, because it has been on the market for the longest time, it has a series of plug-ins and extensions that make the tool complete. Sketch is also very intuitive and, because it is so integrated with the Mac, the experience of using it on the system is impeccable.
In addition to its collaborative essence, automatic versioning draws the users’ attention, the fact that it works very well in the free version, the launch of plug-ins to expand the platform’s capacity, the possibility of access anywhere and the tools that allow you to create different shapes in your design. The fact that Figma is spreading rapidly through several design-related communities is also a great merit of the tool, which extends the ability to collaborate, without complications, with different digital agency teams.
As part of the Adobe family, the XD is very well integrated with other relevant tools, such as Illustrator and Photoshop. It is possible to import from one application to another without a lot of headaches.
Sketch has a big disadvantage here because it is only available for Mac users. Therefore, it can enable tools such as Figma and Adobe XD to innovate beyond basic necessities. In addition, as far as design tools are concerned, Adobe Xd provides a set of reliable responses, while Sketch does not have this feature built in (but it has many plug-ins). If your tool does a better job than others, it is usually sufficient as a reason to switch. Figma’s browser-based approach is also worth seeing.
When talking about Adobe XD and Sketch, the future of the first one looks very bright and will win many Sketch users. Figma’s focus shift can ensure its survival, but it is certain that Adobe XD can be retained. Adobe is strong, and smaller companies such as Figma and Sketch will have to work hard to stay relevant in the future.
